This is not the world's most inspirational picture, it's a scale rule next to a drawing of a bin store. So why have I used this picture?

I was acting for a subcontractor in a dispute with a main contractor. There was a claim and a difference in the valuation of works. The dispute had been rolling on for years without any sign of resolution. I was asked would I have a look at it. 

I checked the main contractor's assessment of the works and noticed that in certain cases there were errors in the measurement. One glaring example was when the surveyor had used the wrong scale. I took the photograph and sent an email to the main contractor noting the error. I had a phone call from an amused managing QS for the main contractor and the principal that any errors in measurement would be corrected. 

The result was that the account was agreed and a dispute avoided. Hence the un-inspirational picture.
